Krafla Volcano, Iceland

Lava fountains play along an eruptive fissure at Iceland's Krafla volcano early in the morning on September 5, 1984.

During the first hours of the eruption, which began just before midnight on the 4th, two eruptive fissures joined to become active along a total length of 8.5 km.

As is often the case with fissure eruptions, activity was later concentrated along a localized part of the fissure.
