Description
(see definition):
Island 1 mi in extent, lying 2 mi SW of Candlemas Island in the South Sandwich Islands. Vindication Island was discovered in 1775 by Captain James Cook, who reported it to be one of the two Candlemas Islands. Reports indicating that the Candlemas Islands contained three islands or a single island for many years overshadowed Cook's earlier description. A survey in 1930 by DI personnel on the Discovery II confirmed Cook's report, thus suggesting the name for this island.
