Description
(see definition):
Island lying SE of Desolation Island in the South Shetland Islands. First charted in 1820-21 by Robert Fildes. Fildes gave the name Wood Harbour or Port Wood to the nearby harbor of Desolation Island in December 1820. Later in that season, however, Fildes changed the name of the harbor to Blythe Bay, which has since become established. Wood Island was applied by the UK Antarctic Place-names Committee (UK-APC) in 1958 and derives from Fildes' original naming.
