A year-round station operated by South Africa opened in 1962: there were three previous stations replaced by SANAE IV; SANAE I (q.v.), SANAE II (q.v.), and SANAE III (q.v.); the new station opened in 1997 approximately 200 km south of the original location of the first three stations - Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP), May 18, 2006.
