DOE's Unconventional Gas Research Programs 1976-1995

3. Structure of the Enhanced Gas Recovery Program (EGR)

The EGR focused on accelerating the production of gas from the eastern Devonian shales, western tight gas sands, coalbeds, and geopressured aquifers.

Three of these targets were the focus of fairly significant R&D programs in terms of funding: the Eastern Gas Shales Program (EGSP); the Western Gas Sands Program (WGSP); and the Methane Recovery from Coalbeds Project (MRCP). Beginning somewhat later were two somewhat smaller (but still important) R&D programs focused on Methane Hydrates and Deep Source Gas (natural gas reservoirs sourced from very deep hydrocarbon sources, generally associated with subduction zones).

There was also a small program dedicated to increasing recovery of natural gas from geologically complex reservoirs, Secondary Gas Recovery, that was funded jointly by DOE and GRI during the early 1990s.
